Do More Shared Writing

This chapter so encouraged me to get out there and do more shared writing in the classroom! The idea of shared writing was well supported with research and Routman really made the correlation to reading. I loved the idea for book reviews, and other responses to reading, which will help students meet reading standards. This chapter was especially full of teaching suggestions to make shared writing a success.
I appreciated the suggestions for reading groups which will help me be more efficient for writing and reading.

I think as teachers we are constantly thinking of teachable moments and I certainly see those moments happening while working on a shared writing piece.

Your student story reminded me of when I was taking the writing essay portion of the PPST before beginning my teaching block of classes in college. For some reason, even though I had a prompt right before me, I just froze! I think I knew I was being timed and I knew the writing had to meet a certain criteria and I was so fearful that I wouldn't be able to meet that criteria. Finally, I began to write about an experience in my life that was very emotional to me and I was able to finish my writing piece in time. It was so frustrating! However, I will always carry that experience with me to remember that sometimes students really DO have writer's block and they need time to work through it.
